Period Stigma, Shame & Fibroids

I’m back this week for the final instalment of my Fibroid Awareness Month videos! And today we talk period stigma, shame and how all that relates to fibroids.

I remember the days of craftily trying to hide my pad and tampon in the hallways at school. Asking to use the washroom and hoping no-one would peep the brightly coloured wrapping of my favourite sanitary pad brand.

Yah, those weren’t fun days at all.

But did you know that period stigma and shame is far more dangerous and the consequences go farther than just our momentary embarrassment or discomfort?

Why Period Stigma must go!

Period stigma is deemed as a barrier in the reproductive health space because if women are not given the space to freely speak on periods then many issues surrounding periods go un discussed leading to issues like fibroids, endometriosis and many other ailments in the dark.

Last year, during our fibroid talk, Jessica Nabongo and I spoke about how period stigma really gets in the way of us freely talking about fibroids and therefore the associated shame makes us ignore the problem.
